Social Security Disability Income
Although the Social Security Administration oversees both programs and medical eligibility is determined in the same manner for each, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are very different.
Unlike with SSDI where the applicants’ work history plays the main role in determining eligibility and benefits are funded through payroll taxes, SSI benefits are strictly “need based,” funded through general fund taxes, and the applicants’ income and assets are the determining factor. SSI is even available to citizens who have never worked before, as long as they meet certain eligibility requirements. Currently, to be financially eligible for SSI benefits one must be unable to work, have less than $2,000 in assets and a very limited income.
